Silo Base Sealing In Scotland

THE PROBLEM

The new build silo was allowing water ingress, causing the grain at the base to germinate and spoil. This meant that more frequent entries into the confined space were required and the operational effectiveness of the silo was reduced. Previous attempts to waterproof the silo base using the original sealant and expanding polyurethane foam had been ineffective.

THE SOLUTION

We proposed the application of our proven Corrolastic SG silo base waterproofing system.

Initially we prepared all surfaces to be coated by method of pressure washing to ensure a clean and grease free surface for the waterproofing system to adhere to.

On externally braced silos such as this the detailing around the external braces is critical to ensure a waterproof seal. Three corrugations behind the bracings were first sealed using a hydrophobic twin component polyurethane resin. This reacted with any trapped water and expanded to form a pressure tight seal.

A bead of sealant was installed at the floor/wall interface to spread the most probable point of movement over a greater distance, allowing greater potential for movement in the waterproofing membrane

Corrolastic SG

Any excess polyurethane foam was trimmed back to provide a surface suitable for waterproofing membrane application.

Corrolastic SG is ideal for waterproofing silo bases for the following reasons;

  1. Damp tolerant, no dew point or humidity restrictions. Proving the surface is free from standing water and the temperature is greater than 5 Degrees centigrade it can be applied all year round.
  2. Flexible – Silos expand and contract through emptying, filling and temperature fluctuation. Any waterproofing system applied to silos needs to be flexible enough to accommodate this.
  3. Excellent Adhesion – Corrolastic SG will adhere to new ‘bright’ galvanising without the need to acid washing or abrasive blasting. Providing cost, safety and environmental benefits.
  4. Durable – Corrolastic SG has an expected service life in excess of 15 years, providing a long term silo base sealing solution.

Over the previously applied sealant detail Corrolastic SG was applied reinforced with a nitrile rubber fleeced bandage to provide additional strength and an additional layer of waterproofing in the area most liable to experience movement. This was embedded in a heavy stripe coat of Corrolastic SG.

Three full coats of Corrolastic SG were then applied to achieve a waterproofing membrane thickness of 3mm.
