Slip Resistant Resin Flooring Suffolk

THE PROBLEM

The old printing factory required a new slip resistant floor suitable for use in a warehouse area as part of its conversion to a food production facility.

THE SOLUTION

We proposed the application of a slip resistant resin floor from Sherwin Williams as a suitable solution.

Initially all surfaces were prepared by method of vacuum controlled track blasting to remove the existing floor paint and provide a mechanical key for the new resin flooring to adhere to.

The perimeter was prepared by method of hand held vacuum controlled diamond grinding and old expansion joint materials removed using a vacuum controlled slitting machine.

Following preparation some cracks and defects were apparent in the floor. The defective areas were isolated, broken out and repaired using a high strength epoxy mortar. Cracks were expressed and filled using a low viscosity epoxy resin to stabilise them prior to priming.

All surfaces were vacuumed clean and as part of our standard quality assurance the moisture content of the slab and climatic conditions checked and recorded to ensure excellent adhesion of the new resin flooring.

The floor was primed using a moisture and oil tolerant epoxy primer, prior to filling minor defects using a twin component filler material.

The filler was sanded flush prior to application of an intermediate coat of high build applied at 0.4Kg/m2. A 0.4mm – 0.8mm quartz aggregate was broadcast into the wet epoxy resin at 3Kg/m2 to provide a slip resistant resin floor.

Any loose and unbound quartz was removed using soft brooms and brushes prior to the application of the same high build epoxy resin as a finish at 0.6Kg/m2. Once cured expansion joints were reflected using a vacuum controlled slitting machine. Where expansion joints are present in a floor these must be reflected to prevent cracking in the new resin flooring – something others often overlook or ignore by filling expansion joints.

Finally these expansion joints were sealed using a flexible polyurethane jointing compound to provide a seamless hygienic finish.
