Silo Roof Sealing & Coating, Suffolk

THE PROBLEM

The five grain storage silos were suffering from corrosion of their roofs which had lead to perforation. This was allowing water ingress and was causing issues with sprouting grain, which in turn prevents proper clearing of the silos without persons entering the confined space.

THE SOLUTION

We proposed the application of Rustoleum Noxyde Plus as a suitable anti corrosion protective coating as well as a waterproofing solution.

As well as containing anti corrosive additives, Rustoleum Noxyde Plus can elongate 200%, forming an elastomeric membrane once cured.

Initially all surfaces to be coated were cleaned by method of high pressure washing and the use of Rustoleum ND14 cleaner.

This ensured that all surfaces were clean and free from organic growth.

The cleanliness of the substrates with regard to soluble salts was confirmed by the conducting of Chlor Tests.

Ensuring that chlorides are not present above levels permitted is essential when applying protective coatings, as if present they cause premature coating failure through osmotic blistering.

Any corroded areas were prepared to ST2 as per ISO8501-1 using wire brushes and scrapers.

One of the key benefits of Rustoleum Noxyde plus is that it can be reinforced to bridge perforations in the roof structure to ensure a water tight seal.

The first coat of Rustoleum Noxyde Plus was applied by method of airless spray in a light grey colour.

The dry fall nature of the overspray for this material was of particular benefit given the elevated position which would cause conventional overspray to be carried great distances and potentially cause damage to surrounding properties and vehicles.

During application wet film thicknesses were monitored to ensure the correct thicknesses were applied.

These were checked post curing by taking dry film thickness readings as part of our standard quality assurance.

The second coat was then applied in a contrasting colour as per best coating practice by method of airless spray.

With a design life of 15 years in a C5 Corrosivity environment as per ISO 12944, this protective coating and waterproofing solution will provide years of protection and waterproofing for our valued client.
