Grange-Over-Sands Promenade Protective Coating

THE PROBLEM

As part of the concrete repair works to the concrete promenade at Grange-Over-Sands a protective coating was required. The wall to be treated was over 2 Kilometres long.

THE SOLUTION

Originally a rigid protective coating system had been proposed, however when we surveyed site we identified the extensive cracking in the wall structure. During our survey we also were informed that the concrete actually contained no steel reinforcing.

With the lack of steel reinforcement in the concrete this meant that conventional considerations with regard to carbonation and chloride ingress were of less importance than preventing freeze thaw damage from water ingress in cracks in the structure.

We instead proposed the application of a flexible crack bridging coating in the form of Masterbuilders Solutions Masterseal 6100FX. This material can crack bridge to 2mm without reinforcement, making it ideal for this protective coating application. This material can also withstand a negative pressure of water, which was a concern given visible moisture emanating from cracks in the wall.

Prior to our arrival on site our client GSSL conducted an extensive concrete repair programme in line with the clients identified repairs.

Concrete Protective Coating 06

The entire wall was high pressure jetted to remove organic growth and contaminants to ensure excellent adhesion of the new protective coating.

Masterbuilders Masterseal 6100FX was applied by method of slurry brushes in two coats as per the manufacturers recommendations.

Concrete Protective Coating 07

As part of our standard quality assurance wet film thickness readings were taken throughout the protective coating application process.

Concrete Protective Coating 08

Being a cementitious coating relative humidity and dew point were not a concern for the application, however the ambient temperatures had to be monitored.

Through the protective coating application process our team had to work around inclement weather and high tides, whilst also working in a pristine natural environment.
