Sulphuric Acid Bund Lining Norfolk

THE PROBLEM

The existing bund lining had reached the end of its service life and a new chemical resistant bund lining was required that would contain the 98% sulphuric acid in the event of a leak or spill and protect the concrete bund structure.

SOLUTION

The existing bund lining was removed using a combination of vibration damped breakers and vacuum controlled diamond grinders. The concrete substrate was then reprofiled using a cementitious fairing coat.

To ensure excellent adhesion of the new bund lining the concrete was primed using a damp tolerant epoxy primer. As per our standard quality assurance the moisture content of the substrate and climatic conditions were tested and recorded prior to coating application.

Because of the extremely aggressive chemicals which the bund lining would be subjected to we proposed the application of Atako ATB GL reinforced vinyl ester lining. Vinyl Ester bund linings have some of the highest levels of chemical and temperature resistance available.

Applying the lining to the bund

The bund lining was applied with two layers for chopped strand matt and finished with two heavy coats of vinyl ester resin. The incorporation of chopped strand matt gives increased crack resistance to the bund lining. The final coat incorporates a top coat additive for additional chemical resistance.

Finally demarcations were reinstated for the client to meet their health and safety requirements.

Whilst hardly the largest bund lining that we have undertaken, stringent quality assurance ensured that the works were completed to a high standard that will ensure the bund lining will offer years of environmental protection.
